2357-58 Amphipoea lucens/fucosa Large/Saltern Ear females

We have recently examined a number of female lucens (taken well away from the coast in Lancashire, Scotland and Ireland) and fucosa (taken at various coastal locations in England and Wales). The above pair exhibited the widest differences in the two sets - A the indentation in the ovipositor, and B the shape of the shoulder on the bursa copulatrix.
In some of the other specimens the differences were reduced, or lacking, or showed features of the other 'species'. If
lucens and fucosa are two species it seems that hybridisation occurs and we conclude that it is not possible to separate them in all cases.
